In anticipation of the kickoff for the PWHL launch on January 1st, each day I will highlight a PWHL personality
Hayley Scamurra stepped onto the ice at the age of three, following the path set by her father and older brothers. Her dad, Peter Scamurra, played one-hundred-thirty-two games for the Washington Capitals in the seventies. Growing up in Buffalo, she played boys’ hockey until transitioning to girls’ when she was in her teens. Commuting to Burlington, Canada, she honed her skills with the Barracudas of the Provincial WHL for two years before assuming the role of captain for the Oakville Hornets.
Her journey led her to Northeastern University, where she studied Speech and Language Pathology.
Returning to Buffalo to join the Beauts, Scamurra’s impact was immediate, contributing to their Isobel Cup victory. In her first full season with the club, she claimed the titles of Rookie of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, and All-Star Game MVP. The following year, she led the league in points and secured gold in her debut Women’s World Championships appearance.
Although the beginning of her PWHPA was affected by COVID-19, Scamurra was able to compete in another Women’s Worlds, earning a silver medal. 2021-2022 marked the realization of her Olympic dream, securing a silver at the Beijing Olympics, swiftly followed by another silver at the World Championships.
Last season, she played for Team Harvey’s in Montreal, winning the Championship. Alongside that new achievement, she also clinched her second gold at the Worlds.
With her relentless defensive prowess, Hayley’s anticipated performance in Ottawa promises to be nothing short of spectacular!
