In anticipation of the kickoff for the PWHL launch on January 1st, each day I will highlight a PWHL personality.
In 2015, Sophia Shaver won gold at the Under-18 Women’s World Championships for the U.S. Although a Minnesota native, she played at Wisconsin, leading the team as captain to a National Championship victory in her senior year. Returning to her roots, she joined Minnesota’s PWHPA team for a couple of years before making a move to Montreal, where she helped Team Harveys secure the championship.
In her sophomore year in college, Sophia faced the devastating loss of her brother Drake to suicide. Initially grappling with isolation and disconnection, she has since become an advocate for mental health awareness.
On a happier note, Sophia Shaver, now Kunin, tied the knot over the summer with Sharks’ Luke Kunin, whom she met while both playing for their respective Badgers teams.
Can’t wait to watch Sophia become a fan favorite in Minnie!
